Ok, the Blogger knowledge base tells me that I do not need the java script from the older blogger: so this should work:

>BloggerArchives<
>a href="http://seatoshiningsea.blogspot.com/archives/>$BlogArchiveLink$<"<>$BlogArchiveName$<>/a< /
>/BloggerArchives<

Notice that I am using an absolute path because my page is referenced to my AOL account to get the pictures. WHY DOES THIS NOT WORK?

PS I inverted the <, and > to >, and < so that the blogger parser would not try to replace the key words.

Sequoia; Big Giants
A place to put everything into perspective. To stand at the bottom of time, God's time. Trees are the sentinels of the mountains. Sequoia are the wisest of them. I wonder what they would say about us? Are we barren and dry kindling dodging the inevitable outcome? or are we creative geniuses finding a new balance with the Earth in our technological age? I am an optimist, and believe that we will continue to find solutions to the problems around us. The real challenge is whether we will do it faithfully, or follow the principles of the fallen man. Sequoia are the gate keepers of a balance, sanctified. We in contrast struggle for the balance in our own personal lives. Few having the freedom of person or soul to guide the species. To stand at the bottom of time, God's time. Hannah, Elizabeth, and John are in so many ways blessed with innocence and naivety about their struggles of the future. Do you remember what is was like to be free? Sequoia is a place that those times faintly echo in memory.

Red, Ripe, and Rockin
The Orange County Fair was a tradition for us when we were young. This time we got to see the FFA pigs, sheep, and cows. Hannah was a little scared of the pigs when we first got there, but after one of the students let her into the pen and pet the pig she had fun. Probably the best part was the pig races. John was chosen as the official starter and the little pigs sure knew how to run that circuit! A Boston rhythm group was a lot of fun as we rapped up the day. The fair is a cocktail of sounds, sights, and smells. Color contrast between fine art vs. livestock auctions. Culinary contrast between simple hot dogs vs. beef smokers. Olfactory contrast between dirty stalls and beautiful bouquets.

Surfing USA
John got to experience the REAL ocean while at grandpa's and grandma's. The Pacific is smooth, big, and beautiful not to mention usually refreshingly cold. This time the temp was great to do some body and board surfing. John caught some big waves as did I. During mid day the wave strength picked up and body surfing was very rewarding. To feel the power of the sea pick you up and throw you on the beach is quite a thrill. I, of course, need to test limits and swam directly out to the west past the half way mark on the pier. I guess the life guards did not like that... hay loosen up will you, I was not planning to drown. By the way, when you deep dive out there you get down into the current of extremely COLD water that remains even in the summer. Surfs UP.

Go EDS!
My mom works at EDS and the kids got the treat of going to her work place. EDS stock has been pretty flat at 22 dollars, but that is a rebound from below 15 earlier in the year. I think that the tech stocks all are going to have a good year because they are so discounted. WOW have you seen Intel and eBay! They have been putting on the steady gains. Comment back and tell me your picks for the year, and did you have the courage to wager on them back in January, 2003?

Ruby's in Seal Beach
One of my favorite memories is going to Seal Beach and eating at Ruby's. The avocado hamburger on sour doe bread is the best. I remember one time after a rainy spell, the pollution was washed out of the sky. The San Jacinto Mountains can be easily seen on a clear day and going at sun set give a spectacular view of the Palisades and Catalina. Why would anyone want to leave this beautiful place I asked myself when NASA forced Boeing to move people to Houston. I am sure that move disrupted many peoples lives that had made life time commitments to the Shuttle Program. Ironically, many of those Shuttle engineers ended up leaving the Shuttle Program and taking on jobs at the Seal Beach or near by Huntington Beach plants.

Beautiful Greeting Cards
My mother is a great artist. I love a number of her oil paintings, especially her wipe out of John Muir. She also like to do wheat weaving and card stamping. Elizabeth has that nature instinct and desire to do all kinds of art and I hope that we will foster that as she grows. Grandma always enjoys sharing her talents, and this time Elizabeth put together a four page greeting card for Michelle, my wife. Together with an iPhoto video slide show of this second part of the trip it made the distance easier to bear.

Weeping Rock and the Narrows in Zion
Zion brings back many memories for me. In undergraduate studies I lead a group of my friends on a backpacking trip in Zion National Park for a week. It turned out to be a quite wet week in which it rained, sleeted, snowed, or hailed every day except one. I found out later (years later) that in fact a couple of the guys were about to commit mutiny! I had of course packed many years with my father and so was prepared for anything. I double bagged my fathers down mummy bag with mine (to keep it dry). I always bag my clothes in zip lock or garbage bags in my pack and carry extra socks, liners, and gloves. That was the first time I had taken a group of green guys out and I did not realize that I needed to go through their gear to make sure they were equally prepared. Another complicating factor was that I was experienced in hiking in the Sierra Nevadas where we never got rain except for those afternoon bursts. A tube tent had always been sufficient and light and we never carried a heavier tent. Not wanting to be a lesser guy, I did not get any feed back that they were struggling until wet feet and poor socks lead to blisters and wet bags was making it miserable for the other guys. One of them did not have the confidence to do the numerous jumps, skips, and hops from slippery rock to rock as we need to ford the rivers many times. After getting a break that one day of sun, and passing out my extra clothes, we did enjoy the rest of the trip, each a little warmer and drier.

This time of course John, Elizabeth, Hannah and I were there in the main valley during the summer and hit the popular tourist points. Weeping Rock is a very refreshing stop and the Narrows was a water adventure for the kids. Swimming in the deeper holes and hiking up the river. I was envious of the guys that were repelling down into the narrows after climbing to the rim earlier in the morning... maybe next time! when John is 18.

Sunrise in Bryce
Bryce is a fantastically beautiful place, especially when at inspiration point during our designated meeting with the new sun of the day. My kids did not have any problem getting up early having been on the road for quite a while and getting on the move at dawn each day. Their creative minds always amaze me. Elizabeth and John are always having a fantasy dialog about some great adventure and this morning they saw great Mayan cities and people in the rock spires. Maybe it is best to hear it from John's own narration!
